In 2001, Herb joined the Tarpley & Underwood team as a manager of estate, gift, and trust work. He specializes in estate planning, estate administration, and estate tax compliance, as well as planning and compliance for trusts and gifting. He brought over seven years of public accounting experience and over fifteen years of private banking experience to the table. Herb has served in the Georgia Society of CPAs’ Estate and Financial Planning Section for four years as Chairman for the Estate Planning Conference Committee. Additionally, Herb has used his expertise to assist as a committee member for the DeKalb Medical Center Foundation’s Planned Gifts Committee. He graduated from the University of Georgia with his BBA and his MBA with an emphasis in accounting and finance before returning to school at Georgia State University where he earned his Masters in Taxation. While attending Georgia State, Herb helped the graduate team in the Arthur Andersen Tax Challenge win third place in the nation.

Herb is the only male in a house of women. He and his wife, Donna, have twin daughters. Herb has stayed active in his daughters’ ballet classes by serving as Treasurer for the Georgia Theater Board. He’s even gone a step further and appeared on stage with them for three years in their annual Nutcracker performance. When he has the time, Herb likes to play basketball, run, hike, and snow ski. He and the girls all enjoy traveling and recently visited England. The Barnes have added to their family by adopting a full sized Collie named Duchess, who is, of course, another girl.
