Prior to joining the firm, John practiced in Moline, Illinois and also served as CFO for an insurance agency. He came to Atlanta and worked for KPMG Peat Marwick before joining Tarpley in Underwood in 1991, the then became a partner in 1993. Business client engagements include companies in manufacturing, wholesale and distribution, construction, retail, software development, services and non-profit. He advises on tax issues regarding business start-up, capital formation, IRS controversies including offers-in-compromise, and tax planning for businesses and individuals. He actively participates in profit enhancement analysis and has been involved with turn-a-round engagements as well as merger and acquisition activities. Individual client engagements include extensive income, estate & gift tax planning. John advises individuals in areas of wealth preservation, wealth transfers, charitable giving, tax (income & estate) minimization and financial planning. John earned his BBA from Texas Christian University.

John's professional and community activities include being past president of the Moline Rotary Club and serving on the board of directors of Lutheran Hospital, Arrowhead Boys Ranch, Junior Achievement and DeKalb Counsel for the Arts. John serves on the board of directors of United Cerebral Palsy - Greater Atlanta and served as chairman of the Business Advisory Council - United Cerebral Palsy. He is presently on the Board of Advisors for the Emory Rehabilitation Clinic and is active in his church- Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. His interests include golf, tennis and skiing. He and his wife, Beth, have two daughters and live in Marietta.
