IIn addition to serving as Managing Shareholder of the firm, Jim spends a significant amount of his time working in the areas of estate and financial planning, individual tax planning and compliance, related investment advisory services as well as estate and trust administration and compliance. He is a member of the DeKalb Estate Planning Council and past President of the Atlanta Estate Planning Council and is a Trustee of the Georgia Federal Tax Conference. Jim is a Past President of the Georgia Society of CPAs. He has previously worked in the GSCPA as Chairman of its Membership, Budget, Insurance and Estate and Gift Tax Committees. He chaired the GSCPA Insurance Trust and has had numerous other involvements at the state level. Jim has co-authored and taught a Fiduciary Accounting Workshop for other CPAs and has made numerous presentations on other estate and tax planning topics. Prior to entering public accounting, Jim worked in a management group for Southern Bell and was a management and budget analyst for DeKalb County, Georgia. In 1975 he joined Deloitte, Haskins & Sells and remained there until 1978 when he left to co-found Tarpley & Underwood. Jim received his Bachelor of Industrial Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and his Master of Professional Accountancy degree from Georgia State University.

Jim also has had extensive community involvement. As a young alumnus, he served on the Committee of Twenty, a committee of young alumni appointed by the Georgia Tech Board of Trustees and during that service had involvement in the development of the Advanced Technology Development Center and the related Venture Capital Conference. He has previously served as Commissioner of the Housing Authority of Decatur, a member of the Georgia State University School of Accountancy Advisory Council, a Director of Reach Out Ministries, Inc., a member of the Finance Committee of Providence Christian Academy, chairman of the Stewardship Team of North Point Community Church and chaired the Planned Gifts Committee of the DeKalb Medical Center Foundation for the first 7 years of its existence. He is presently a member of the Board of Directors of the Caldwell & Orkin Market Opportunity Fund, Chairman of the Gwinnett County Retirement Plans Management Committee, a member of the Georgia State University Planned Giving Advisory Council, a member of the Georgia Council on Planned Giving and an Elder at NorthPoint Community Church. Jim and his wife, Kay, have three children and live in Lilburn.
